Artist’s Statement

Painting is at the center of what I do as an artist. Whatever hybrid I dream up as I move through an idea whether it’s the inclusion of a photo or a sculptural element my first goal is always to make it a painting. What I mean by that is the work should honor the flat surface, make the compositional shapes work and consider the use of value and color. I always start and finish a creation with this goal in mind. As planned as some of these paintings look, they are often very immediate in their execution. It may take me weeks or months to resolve a painting but the initial impulse is quick and allows me to get my thoughts down on the surface. Not all of what I make sees the light. I edit thoroughly and often repaint yet for me the immediacy of thought and action that painting gives me is the core to my practice as an artist.
