Tom Dowling has been an active artist since 1978. Growing up in the Los Angeles culture, he found the ideas of Minimalism, California Light and Space, and Finish Fetish influencing his aesthetic, and these concepts have become deeply ingrained in his studio practice. Understanding that the early abstract movements of the 20th Century were the theoretical and formal basis for contemporary art, he dove into those primary sources to try to dialogue with the founders and innovators of art. The early influences formative in his work evolved into a refined personal style that underpins his take on a modernist language. Tom explored these various styles and philosophies over the years, establishing a large body of work. Today he maintains studios in Southern California and West Cork, Ireland.

Artist’s Statement

These artworks build upon my interest in geometric abstraction. I create an experience for the viewer that is unique. Building on the rich modernist tradition of reductive formalism, I tweak and push the forms into something new. My inspiration for these images often comes from my experiences traveling and my observation and engagement with the architecture and art that I see. The titles occasionally reflect the original source of experience. My process of creating is a dialogue. I have “conversations” with art and artists, places, monuments, and literature. These discussions connect me to the ideas and issues of the past, and to cultures other than my own.
